Your swift brick and nest box data matters – send us your records.
🎥 Watch Sheffield’s swift bricks and nest boxes in action on our YouTube channel here:
Your swift brick or nest box could help support Sheffield’s swifts. By checking them each season and sending us your records, you help us understand what is working and strengthen the case for more swift-friendly nest provision in planning and new developments.
What to do
- Check once a month from mid-May to mid-August.
- Best time: evening, around 7.30–9.30pm, or about an hour before dusk.
- Look for signs of swift activity and note what you see.

Record
- Unused: no evidence of swift activity
- Prospecting: swifts visit the site, but there is no confirmed entry.
- Occupied: clear entry or other direct evidence
- Breeding evidence: nest building, eggs, chicks, or regular feeding visits
Send you records

Social Media:
If you’re happy to share, we’d love photos or short videos for social media. We won’t identify you or your home, and your contributions help encourage more swift nesting provision across the city. Email them to us or send them on WhatsApp to 07850 799891.
Enjoy your time watching swifts – and thank you for helping us shape their future.
- Would you like to add to your artificial nest set up – or add a swift caller to encourage faster take up?
- Do you know a community group, business or local venue – such as a pub, school, sports centre, community centre, library or church – that might like to provide nests for swifts?
Email us and we’ll help.
