Eight New Homes for Sheffield’s Swifts at St Mark’s!

We’re delighted to announce that eight brand-new swift nest chambers have been installed behind the stone louvres of the north-side belfry at St Mark’s Church, Broomhill. These carefully designed spaces are now ready to welcome returning swifts to the heart of Sheffield.

Our warm thanks go to Margaret Ainger and Martin Godley, who’s enthusiasm and persistence made this project possible. Their efforts have helped ensure that yet another of Sheffield’s landmark buildings can play its part in providing secure homes for swifts.

We’d also like to give a huge mention to Jan-Erik Bullet, habitat hero of Nestworks, who designed, made, and installed the new boxes. His skill and care have produced a set of nest chambers perfectly tailored to the needs of these remarkable birds.

As part of the visit, we also gave a short talk to the congregation at St Mark’s, explaining why Sheffield’s swifts urgently need safe nesting places and how churches and community buildings can make a real difference. It was inspiring to see such interest and support for protecting these wonderful summer visitors.

These hidden homes now lie behind the elegant stonework – a wonderful blend of heritage and conservation – and we’ll be keeping an eye on the site as the season unfolds.
